The Sprout Film Festival is coming to Portland!

The festival aims to raise awareness of the lives, accomplishments and performances of people with developmental disabilities.

You are invited to experience the first ever Sprout Film Festival in Portland. The festival showcases the lives, accomplishments, and creativity of people with developmental disabilities as directors, videographers and actors. The Premiere will be held at the McMenamins Kennedy School on Saturday May 12^th 2012 from 6:30 to 8:30pm. The festival will entertain and enlighten guests with a selection of short films focused on real life challenges including relationships, employment, and general acceptance to fit into a world where persons with disabilities are often treated as second class citizens. Guests are invited to order from the full McMenamins menus in the Theater and enjoy the show.

Funds raised from the event will support the efforts of both The Riot and Inclusion, Inc. to promote the rights of individuals with disabilities and connect them to opportunities in the community that support these citizens to maintain independent and productive lives.

Portland to launch first citywide test of the community notification system January 26th

On January 26th, the anniversary of our region’s last great earthquake, the Portland Bureau of Emergency Management (PBEM) -in partnership with Multnomah County- will initiate the first-ever, citywide test of Portland’s community notification system. This relatively new system has been used successfully in real, small-scale emergencies. But it has never been stress-tested on a large scale.

During this citywide test, PBEM will attempt to send a single message via landline phone, cell phone, text, and email to a maximum number of Portlanders in the shortest amount of time possible. “We want this test to expose any weaknesses in the system,” said PBEM Director Carmen Merlo.

Greater participation in the test will ensure a larger sample group and help PBEM gauge the system’s functionality. Merlo encourages Portlanders to register for this and all future notifications by signing up at www.PublicAlerts.org. Personal contact information provided during registration is kept private and used only for the purpose of sending geographically tailored emergency messages. During the January 26th test, residents will be notified only if the contact information provided corresponds with a Portland mailing address.

It bears reminding, our region could experience a magnitude 9.0 or greater Cascadia subduction zone earthquake at any moment. The last one occurred January 26, 1700. Scientists say we are in the average window of time during which these massive, destructive earthquakes occur. The community notification system may serve as an invaluable communication tool during this and other kinds of emergencies.

Portland Noise Review Board - Open Position

Portland’s volunteer Noise Review Board currently has a position the City is looking to fill. One seat is open for a “Citizen at Large” community representative on the board.

The Board is comprised of five members including: three citizen at large positions, a representative from the construction industry, and a professional in the field of acoustics. Appointments to the volunteer Noise Review Board are made for a three-year period.

The Noise Review Board normally meets once a month on the second Wednesday evening of the month. The Board is charged with making decisions on Noise Variances for projects that range from nighttime construction projects to large outdoor concerts. The Board also works to develop long term objectives for achieving reduction of sound levels in the community.

If you have further questions regarding the Noise Review Board, contact the City’s Noise Control Officer, Paul van Orden at (503) 823-5829. Interested parties are encouraged to file an official application for the City of Portland Noise Review Board and attend a Noise Review Board meeting (next scheduled meeting is February 8th, 2012 at 6 PM). Applications can be acquired from the City’s Office of Neighborhood Involvement. Completed applications should be filed by no later than Friday February 15, 2012 .

Resolutions Northwest (RNW) is now accepting applications for our annual Volunteer Mediation Training. This 38-hour basic mediation training is free in exchange for a one-year weekly ongoing training and volunteer commitment to help diverse neighbors and communities in Portland resolve conflicts with each other.

Hollywood home to Portland’s Veterans Day parade

Hollywood will host the 37th annual Ross Hollywood Veterans Day parade Nov. 11, 2011. The parade begins at 9:45 a.m. at Northeast 40th Avenue and Hancock Street and travels east on Northeast Sandy Boulevard to Northeast 48th Avenue. The Ross Hollywood Veterans Day parade is the only parade in the Portland area held on Veterans Day. Harold Ross, founder of Ross Hollywood Chapel, which continues to sponsor the annual event, first organized it.

Army veteran Dr. George Timmons, 91, Portland, will serve as this year’s grand marshal. Timmons was originally sent to the Pacific Ocean Theater of WWII as a member of a military band. However, he soon had to trade his trombone for a rifle and became part of the Army’s 41st Division’s fight with the Japanese on Biak Island off New Guinea’s Papua coast. Following his military service he served as assistant dean of education at Portland State University and led a swing orchestra for several years.

Parade participants will include marching bands, the historic horse-mounted Buffalo Soldiers Moses William Chapter of the 9th and 10th Calvary, military service organizations and marching bands. Boy Scout and Girl Scout troops will participate with parents and military veterans.

A memorial presentation at the Ross Hollywood Chapel, 4733 Northeast Thompson Street, will follow the parade. Covered seating will be available for seniors and those with disabilities.

Veterans are also invited to attend a free USO-style show following the presentation at the Hollywood Senior Center, 1820 Northeast 40th Avenue. Hollywood entertainer Tony Starlight, Tony Starlight’s Supper Club and Lounge, will showcase music from the World War II years and refreshments will be served.

L’ARCHE Portland hosts benefit concert with local celebrities

L’Arche Portland, a nonprofit community in which people with and without developmental disabilities share life together, announced that it will host its 2011 Benefit Concert: An Evening with Julianne Johnson and Friends, featuring Patrick Lamb and Michael Allen Harrison. The concert will be held on Saturday, October 15, 2011 at 7:30 p.m. at the Madeleine Parish at 3123 NE 24th Ave.

Tickets for the concert are $20 in advance and $25 at the door and all proceeds will go directly to support L’Arche Portland’s work of creating home and building community for people with and without developmental disabilities. The event will also feature a raffle for a 7-day stay at a condo in Las Vegas, including airfare and tickets to Cirque Du Soleil.

Leaf Day North East

The City of Portland Bureau of Transportation has been working hard to improve the Leaf Day program for 2011. Information is now available to the public about this year's leaf pickup service.

The city has launched a new website at www.portlandonline.com/leafday with all the details. New program elements include an online Leaf Zone Locator and the ability to opt out or pay the leaf fee online.

In the next few weeks, customers in the city's Leaf Service Area, which includes 30 Leaf Zones, will receive a mailer that highlights the changes in the program, provides the schedule and fee information, explains how to prepare for scheduled Leaf Day(s), and recommends how to get the most out of the Leaf Day service.

Customers who opted out of the service and fee in 2010 will soon receive an additional mailer that walks them through this year's opt-out process.

Friends of Grant Athletics to hold community fundraiser on October 1

The nonprofit group raising money to renovate the athletic fields and track at Grant High is holding a community event and fundraiser on Saturday, Oct. 1 from 4 to 8 p.m. at Grant Park. The event includes a 5K, 3K and kids fun run. There will also be food, live music and raffle prizes. The group has raised about $700,000 on its way to a goal of $1.9 million.

Portland Fire & Rescue Will Open 30 Fire Stations, Sponsor Community Service Project on 10th Anniversary of 9/11

On September 11th, all 30 Portland Fire stations will be open to the public. Community members are invited to stop by their local station between 8:00 am and 5:00 pm for a time of reflection and remembrance with firefighters. Participants will have the opportunity to write messages, thoughts, and reflections at the stations on single pages that will become part of a large memory book. The book will be permanently displayed at the Historic Belmont Firehouse at 900 SE 35th.

Open House: NE Klickitat "Green Street" Project

The city is designing a series of 'green street facilities' in the North East neighborhoods. The project includes constructing vegetated curb extensions and stormwater planters, along more than 60 blocks. The design includes a rain garden on NE Klickitat between NE Alameda Street and NE 38th Avenue. The project will also narrow NE Klickitat between NE 23rd and 24th avenues at the Madeleine School, and construct new ADA ramps, and add “bulb out” corners to shorten crossing distances for pedestrians. In addition, sewer mains will be extended in 4 blocks of Klickitat.

The project is about 60% designed. Neighbors are invited to attend this Open House to meet the City design team, review the designs and give input. As the design team moves toward a completed design, your comments will play a part in their work. Without hearing from you, they can’t take your concerns into consideration.

July 30th - Graffiti Cleanup
Continuing the good work done by your neighbors in May, the BWNA and volunteers will again team up with Portland's Graffiti Abatement Program to fight back against graffiti in our neighborhood. We'll meet at Bethany Lutheran Church on NE 37th and NE Skidmore at 8:30 am for coffee, bottled water and pastries. Then we'll form teams and distribute graffiti removal supplies. Beaumont Business Association's annual Fremont Festival is coming August 6th—and your help is needed!

Approximately 30 volunteers are needed to help the day of the event. Volunteers are needed for kids zone, parade, stages, set-up and tear down, selling Pub-Crawl t-shirts and kids zone tickets, directing vendors and more. Volunteers get to participate in this great community-building event and receive Volunteer T-Shirts, food and drink tokens!

Just a reminder that April's general meeting on Monday (April 11th) is the biggest and best of the year, because it doubles as "Taste of Beaumont" and includes elections of officers and new Board members.

Taste of Beaumont begins at 6:30 p.m. (not 7:00), which features free cuisine samples (courtesy of a dozen or so local restaurants & cafes) and refreshments (courtesy of BWNA, Beaumont Market, and Starbucks) for your dining pleasure. The Beaumont Middle School Small Jazz Combo will perform as well (under the direction of Cynthia Plank).

Following the meal and entertainment, we'll commence with business meeting activities, including a crime report from a local officer, announcements from a number of neighborhood organizations & residents, and then elections. There are four vacant BWNA Board positions open, and I encourage you to consider volunteering to have your name placed in nomination. (Requirements are that you live in the BW neighborhood, can attend meetings on the second Monday evening of most months, and are interested in becoming actively engaged in improving & enhancing our community.) At the end of the evening, door prizes (courtesy of local businesses) will be raffled off.

Hope to see you at Bethany Lutheran Church (corner of 37th & Skidmore) on Monday evening!
